Kpler Chartering - Tonnage list guide

The Tonnage list shows you which vessels are open, where, and whether they can reach your cargo in time. This guide covers how to build a list, filter it, read the table and map, and keep open positions up to date.

Written by Isabella Koustas Murcia

Tonnage list is part of the Kpler Tanker and Chartering products.

The Tonnage List with the sidebar, list controls, view icons, filters and View menu numbered

1 Create new list · 2 Manage open positions · 3 Table, Split and Map views · 4 Add filter · 5 View menu

Create a list

  • Click + at the top of the sidebar, or start from one of the six templates: Aframax bound USG (US Gulf), VLCC bound MEG (very large crude carrier, Middle East Gulf), Handy bound ARA (Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp), Kamsarmax/Panamax - ECSA (East Coast South America), Kamsarmax/Panamax - USGC (US Gulf Coast) and Supramax/Ultramax - South East Asia.

  • Choose a List mode. Tonnage list (Open positions) finds vessels by open dates and locations. Tonnage list (ETA) finds vessels by their estimated time of arrival (ETA) at one reference zone. The ETA can be based on the latest Automatic Identification System (AIS) position or the latest open position. Fleet list follows the vessels of one or more commercial operators or specific vessel classifications. Blank canvas (manual selection) starts empty and is available in Advanced mode only.

  • Name the list and set List visibility. Private lists are visible to you only. Shared lists are visible to everyone in your organisation, and a shared list cannot be made private again.

  • Switch on Advanced mode to add commercial operator, ownership and management, and vessel history filters. You can also add them after the list is created.

  • For an ETA list, set the Reference zone, ETA within the next days, Calculate ETA from (Latest AIS location or Latest open date) and Average speed (in Knots). The ETA is a calculated estimate, not a live signal from the vessel.

Choose a view

  • Use the three icons at the top right to switch between Table, Split and Map. Split shows the table and the map side by side, with a draggable divider.

  • In the table, click View to choose Flat list or Group by zones. Grouping puts vessels under their open zone, with a vessel count. Vessels with no zone sit in UNGROUPED at the end.

  • In the same menu, Vessels switches between Matching and Hidden, and Source filters by User, Email and AIS.

  • Your view and grouping reset when you reload the page.

Filter your list

  • Click Add filter and search for the filter you want. Each filter is a pill: edit its values and click Apply.

  • Open locations searches shipping zones, ports and countries. Select a wider group such as UK/Cont (UK and Continent) to include every zone beneath it. See shipping zones for how zones are built.

  • Open dates takes a rolling range (5, 10, 20 or 30 days, or your own number), a past and future window, or exact dates.

  • Received filters on when the open position reached Kpler, from the last 2 hours up to 30 days, or exact dates.

  • Show expired open positions and Show market open positions are checkboxes. Market positions are on by default.

  • Vessel filters include classification, load state, current location, maximum age, dimensions, risk status, ownership and management, commercial operator, YtD CII rating (year-to-date Carbon Intensity Indicator rating), Last port calls, Heading to, Last cargos and Last AIS received.

Read the table

  • Vessel is always shown. Use the column picker to show, hide and reorder the others. Your choices are saved for each list.

  • Open dates (UTC) (Coordinated Universal Time), Open location and Open Zone show when and where the vessel becomes available. A Prompt badge marks prompt availability, and expired dates are greyed.

  • Position source shows where the open position came from: User, Email or Kpler. Sender shows who sent an emailed position.

  • Estimated ETA (UTC) appears on ETA lists. Click Add ETA to add up to five ETA columns.

  • Date received shows when the position was received or last edited. Under 24 hours old is highlighted.

  • Click a column header to sort. By default, lists sort by ETA, then vessel name.

  • You can edit Ownership and management (Commercial operator, Beneficial owner etc), Cargo tanker status, IMO classes, Last products and Notes directly in the grid. Your edits are visible only within your organisation.

Manage open positions

An open position says when and where a vessel will next be available. It can come from a parsed email, your own entry, Smart fill, WhatsApp or, if nobody in your organisation has entered one, Kpler market data.

  • Click Manage open positions in the sidebar, or press Shift+P, to open the editor in its own window.

  • Choose Select a vessel to enter a position by hand, or Smart fill to paste text or attach a PDF, Excel, PNG or JPG file. Review the result before you save.

  • You can also click an Open date or Open location cell to edit it in the grid.

  • The most recently updated position is shown. Click the open location in the grid, a box will open then click the lock icon on a position during a negotiation to pause newer updates, and click it again to resume. No history is lost.

  • Open a vessel's Positions tab to see its history. You can delete positions you added yourself. Positions that came from email cannot be deleted.

  • To send positions from WhatsApp, verify your number under Settings > Integrations. See Send open positions and fixtures via WhatsApp.

Use the map

  • The map shows every vessel in your list at its latest AIS position. Hover a vessel to see its speed, draft, AIS destination, open location and dates, last products and ETA.

  • Click a vessel to see its route and details.

  • Shift + click selects or deselects a vessel.

  • Ctrl or Cmd + click draws a polygon around vessels to select them. Double-click to close it.

  • With several vessels selected, switch on Show routes to draw all their routes.

Review voyages

Select a vessel and the voyages panel opens on the right. It lists the vessel's voyages over the last 12 months, newest first.

  • The summary shows the number of voyages and their average length, plus Utilisation: the share of days spent loaded on completed voyages.

  • Each voyage card shows the load and discharge route, the charterer, the total loaded in kt (thousand tonnes) and the product. An ongoing voyage also shows the current commercial operator.

  • Click the arrow on a card (Show voyage stops) to see a timeline of stops, the cargo loaded or discharged at each, and the sailing days between them. A dashed line means the leg is projected.

  • The selected voyage's track and stops appear on the map. Hover a stop for its port, cargo, arrival and departure.

  • Use the arrow keys to move between vessels, or between voyages when a voyage card is selected. Press Esc to close the vessel.

  • Search the panel by location or product.

The panel under the table has more on the selected vessel: Vessel details, Positions, Fixtures and Emails.

Manage the vessels in your list

  • "Add vessel" on the top searches by name or IMO number (the unique vessel identifier). You can paste several at once.

  • At the end of the vessel's row, click the three dots or select the eye icon. "Hide" removes vessels you do not want from your working list. Hide one vessel, select several, or draw a polygon on the map. Click View and choose Hidden to see them again.

  • Same with the pin icon instead. "Add permanently" keeps a vessel in the list even if it stops matching your filters.

  • Remove takes a vessel you added out of the list.

  • Next to the list name, "Create fleet" saves the selected vessels, or all of them, as a named fleet. The fleet then appears as a filter in the Tonnage list, Cargo list and Fixtures list.

  • Next to the list name, "Export" downloads the rows you see as CSV or Excel. You can choose columns, rename them and save an export template.

  • Lists refresh automatically. Next to the list name click Refresh list to update on demand, or Pause auto-refresh while you work.

  • Click See all shortcuts in the sidebar menu for the keyboard shortcuts, such as Shift+F to search and Shift+N to create a list.

FAQs

1. What is the difference between a Tonnage list (Open positions), a Tonnage list (ETA), and a Fleet list?
An Open positions list finds vessels by when and where they become open. An ETA list finds vessels by their estimated arrival at one basis port. A Fleet list follows the vessels of one or more commercial operators or specific vessel classifications.

2. Where do the open positions in my list come from, and which one am I seeing?
Positions can come from parsed emails, your own entries, Smart fill, WhatsApp, or Kpler market data when nobody in your organisation has entered one. The most recently updated position is the one shown. The Position source column tells you whether it came from User, Email or Kpler.

3. How is the ETA calculated, and can I rely on it?
The ETA is an estimate based on the settings you choose: the reference zone, the average speed, and whether to start from the latest AIS location or the latest open date. It is not a live signal from the vessel, so use it for screening and confirm before you commit.

4. Can I stop a position from changing while I negotiate?
Yes. Click the lock icon on the position to pause newer updates, and click it again to resume. No history is lost, and you can review it in the vessel’s Positions tab.

5. Who can see my lists and my edits?
Private lists are visible only to you. Shared lists are visible to everyone in your company and cannot be made private again. Edits you make in the grid, such as commercial operator, cargo tanker status, IMO classes, last products and notes, are private to your organisation.
