5 October 2026 - Chartering: Voyage Calculator

Voyage Calculator helps you work out the full economics of a voyage before you fix it: freight revenue, every cost involved, and what that nets out to. This guide walks through setting up your first calculation and reading the results.

Setting up your vessel

  • Search for your vessel by name or IMO in the vessel search field, or pick a generic vessel model instead if you don't have a specific vessel in mind.

  • Voyage Calculator's cost calculator currently supports liquids vessels only. Searching for a dry bulk, LNG, or LPG vessel won't return results in this release.

  • If you're chartering on a time charter basis, enter a Vessel Hire rate ($/day) and Hire Commission (%) next to the vessel field. This unlocks the Expected P&L view in your results.

Rotation

  • Add each port your voyage will call at, in order. Drag and drop a row to reorder it. If you use a vessel as your starting point instead of a port, Voyage Calculator routes from that vessel's current position.

  • For every stop, choose an activity: Load, Discharge, None, or Stop. A stop that's a vessel position rather than a port defaults to None.

  • You can add more than one activity to the same stop, for example loading two different grades at one port, or both loading and discharging there.

  • Quantity, load or discharge rate, and turn time are pre-filled once you select a vessel, based on the vessel's size class. You can adjust any of these manually, and change port terms from the dropdown menu. Switching the quantity unit (for example tons to barrels) applies to every stop at once, not just the row you're editing.

  • Port charges are pre-filled too, based on your vessel and the ports you've chosen: average loading charges at your origin, average discharging charges at your destination, and combined average charges at any other stop. Select the ↗ icon next to the port charges column header to see the minimum, average, and maximum charges for each port and product.

  • The default start time is the current time in UTC. You can adjust it manually.

  • Use the route avoidance option to avoid the Suez Canal, the Panama Canal, ECA zones, or HRA (piracy risk) zones.

Freight

  • Choose how freight is quoted: Worldscale, $/t, Lumpsum, or a target TCE. Select Market Rates to reference Baltic benchmark rates.

  • Commission defaults to 3.75%. You can adjust it manually.

Bunkers

  • Voyage Calculator automatically fills in a bunker price at each port. Override it yourself, or search for a specific bunkering port if you want pricing from a different location.

  • Fuel consumption figures also auto populate once you've selected your vessel, based on that vessel's typical consumption. Override any figure if you have more accurate data for your own vessel.

  • Choose your fuel grade separately for inside and outside ECA/SECA zones (for example MGO inside, VLSFO outside), since your route can fall on either side. Consumption is assumed to be the same regardless of grade: only the fuel price changes by zone, so your total fuel cost reflects how much of your route falls inside versus outside these zones.

  • Set your loaded and ballast speed separately (in knots), since a vessel usually sails faster empty than loaded. Voyage Calculator pre-fills a default for each, which you can override. A sea margin percentage buffers both figures for weather and current. These speeds drive both your voyage duration and your fuel cost. Turn on Adjust per leg if you want to set a different speed for one specific leg instead of using one loaded and one ballast speed for the whole voyage.

Other costs

  • Canal costs. If your route crosses the Suez or Panama Canal, Voyage Calculator estimates the relevant canal cost automatically, based on each canal authority's own tariff. You can override the calculated figure.

  • EU ETS (emissions) cost. Voyage Calculator also works out your EU ETS cost automatically, using a live EUA price which can be overwritten. The allowance figure itself becomes read only once it has a value, and shows "EU ETS cost not applicable" for a route with no EU ETS exposure.

  • Miscellaneous costs. Add any other cost as a flat figure: additional dues, additional fuel, demurrage, position/reposition, and others. Voyage Calculator doesn't calculate demurrage for you. It works out the laytime and working days allowed by the terms you've entered, but if your actual time in port runs over that, you'll need to estimate and enter the demurrage cost yourself.

Reading your results

  • Net TCE appears for every freight basis except Target TCE. If your freight basis is Target TCE, Voyage Calculator shows cost per ton instead, and cost per barrel too if your cargo is denominated in barrels.

  • If a Vessel Hire rate is entered, Expected P&L will be appended to the header alongside whichever of the above is shown.

  • Next, your itinerary's headline numbers: voyage duration, total distance, and how much of your route falls within SECA and piracy (HRA) zones.

  • Below that: the route map, a full cost breakdown, and a separate fuel cost breakdown.

Saving and sharing calculation

  • Once you've completed a calculation, select Save and give it a name. You can save up to 20 calculations.

  • Choose whether it's Private (only you can see it) or Share with team. A shared calculation shows who created it: only the creator can edit it, and everyone else sees a view only copy. You can change this setting at any time.

  • If your first stop was a specific vessel rather than a port, keep in mind that Voyage Calculator saves that vessel's position at the moment you save the calculation. Reopening it later won't reflect the vessel's current position, it will use the position from when you saved it.

  • Access, rename, or delete a saved calculation from the sidebar. If you have several saved, use the search field to find the one you need.
