Kpler Tonnage list empowers chartering professionals, shipbrokers, and freight analysts with real-time visibility into vessel availability based on location, open positions, and voyage feasibility.

This guide walks you through how tonnage lists are created, updated, and enriched by our proprietary intelligence engine.

List Creation Types

Kpler offers two main types of Tonnage Lists:

1. Manual Lists

You directly select vessels using identifiers (e.g. IMO or name). These are static lists, ideal for tracking specific vessels or curated selections.

2. Smart Sync Lists

These dynamic lists auto-populate based on filters you define, such as:

  • Vessel attributes (type, owner, size, age, status).

  • Open positions (automatically parsed from emails or entered manually).

  • Destination + ETA window (Kpler calculates feasibility based on AIS and known vessel states).

  • Fleet list - e.g by vessel owner (Kpler calculates feasibility based on one or multiple selected filters).

Example: A Smart Sync list for LR2 vessels that can arrive in Singapore within 5 days will include:

  • Vessels matching LR2 criteria.

  • Vessels en route and likely to arrive on time (via ETA prediction).

  • Any with last declared open positions to Singapore near the desired timeframe.

You can broaden or narrow your scope using regions, zones, or specific ports.

List Content & Customization

Once a list is built:

  • Vessels are ranked by ETA to destination.

  • You can customize visible data using the Column Selector.

  • ETA is calculated by considering:

    • Vessel status (ballast/loaded)

    • Cargo discharge points

    • Real-time AIS and destination proximity

You can configure ETA rules, for example:

  • Use the open position as a via-point (planned).

  • Calculate ETA from last known discharge location.

Refresh Logic & Dynamic Updates

  • Auto-refresh: Lists refresh every minute, ensuring you always have the latest open positions.

  • Updates are event-driven: if a vessel is fixed, changes status, or receives a new position, it’s reflected almost instantly.

  • Manual: At any time you can trigger a list refresh to confirm ETA based on your recent edits.

Vessel state changes (e.g. loading/discharging) also trigger re-evaluation of list eligibility.

Managing Open Positions

Each vessel’s open position reflects when and where it will next be available. This can come from:

  1. Email Parsing:

    • Kpler’s parser scans brokers’ emails.

    • Positions are extracted with 90%+ accuracy.

    • Populated automatically in near real-time (≈2–3 mins delay).

  2. Manual Entry:

    • Use the Manage Open Position editor or inline quick edits.

    • See timeline history: manual + parsed entries.

    • Decide which open position you want to apply.

User overrides in private lists will not be overwritten by newer entries unless manually reset. This gives users full editorial control.

Conflict Resolution

When multiple open positions exist for a vessel:

  • The latest entry is displayed by default.

  • Users can view the full history and select the valid one by deleting incorrect ones or adding/editing a new one .

  • Filtered-out vessels (e.g., those not realistically reaching destination, incorrect CII) are viewable for transparency.

Enrichment via AIS & Intelligence

Kpler enhances your list with AIS-powered insights:

  • Vessel location, heading, and ETA.

  • Speed, draft, and last 3 discharged cargoes.

  • Risk & compliance alerts (sanctioned vessels or at-risk):

    • Only R&C subscriber can see the type of detected risk

  • Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) estimates (year-to-date).

Manual Adjustments

  • Add or remove vessels at any time.

  • Force-include a vessel, even if it doesn’t meet filters.

  • Remove known fixed vessels with one click.

  • Manually added vessels are marked as “User Added”.

Visual Map Integration

Each Tonnage List has a Map View:

  • See vessel positions.

  • Hover to get quick stats: ETA, draft, last products.

  • Check risk flags directly on the map.

Security

  • Risk alerts (e.g. OFAC listings) are updated constantly to flag compliance risks.

  • All open positions are private to your organization. No data is shared externally.

  • Parsing is secured via our LLM provider —no data is reused for training.
