Recent Risk & Compliance product updates

We have released several Risk & Compliance updates designed to improve user experience, strengthen compliance screening workflows, and provide clearer context behind vessel, cargo, trade, and ownership risks.

This release includes:

  • A new operational risk indicator for AIS Identity Manipulation

  • A new structured Ownership table

  • A new “Under OPC column” for Cargo and Trade risk screening

  • Updated Risk & Compliance narratives for clearer, more consistent messaging

1. New Operational Risk: AIS Identity Manipulation

We have introduced a new operational risk indicator flagging detected cases of intentional vessel identity falsification.

The initial focus is on Zombie vessels, a growing phenomenon where an active vessel transmits AIS messages using the identity of a scrapped ("dead") vessel, effectively masquerading as a non-existent entity to evade detection.

Why it matters

Identity falsification has become increasingly prevalent following the expansion of sanctions regimes since 2022, representing a material operational and sanctions-evasion risk. It may indicate attempts to obscure vessel activity, evade regulatory scrutiny, or create confusion during compliance screening.

What users will see

Where available, AIS Identity Manipulation event details include:

  • Date: Date of the identified event

  • Current vessel: The vessel’s true identity

  • False vessel: The vessel’s fake (reused) identity

  • Reasoning: Explanation of the detected behaviour - Zombie vessel impostor currently available

  • Zone: Area where the event was identified

  • Source: Source of the identified event, including a link to supporting satellite imagery where available

Status logic

  • No risk: No AIS identity manipulation has been detected for the vessel.

  • Amber risk: AIS identity manipulation has been detected for the vessel.

This release introduces zombie vessels as the first supported identity manipulation reasoning type. Additional identity falsification methods may be added in future releases.

2. New Ownership Table

We have replaced the previous ownership narrative format with a structured Ownership table.

The new table gives users a clearer view of current and historical ownership information, making it easier to screen vessel ownership details and review ownership status in a more scannable layout.

Why it matters

The previous ownership view relied on longer narrative text. The new table makes ownership information easier to interpret and compare, particularly when users need to review current and historical entities as part of a compliance workflow.

3. Cargo and Trade Risk: New “Under OPC” column

We have added a new “Under OPC” column to the Cargo and Trade risks table.

A new "Under OPC" column has been added to the Cargo/Trade risks table, providing an additional layer of context for risk screening. Following the introduction of the Oil Price Cap framework by the US, UK, EU, Japan, Canada, and Australia, this column helps distinguish between Russian cargo loadings that fall within the OPC framework and those that do not.

What users will see

  • Ticked: The OPC framework applies and should be considered. This is an indicator, not a confirmation of compliance or price verification.

  • Hover details: Users can view the specific entities connecting the vessel to the OPC scope.

Why it matters

The new column adds another layer of context for cargo and trade risk screening, helping users identify when the Oil Price Cap framework may be relevant to their review.

4. Updated Risk & Compliance narratives

We have also revisited and standardized frontend narratives across the Risk & Compliance platform.

This includes clearer, more consistent messaging across areas such as:

  • Vessel risks

  • Cargo risks

  • Trade risks

  • Flag risks

  • High-risk STS transfers

  • Ownership details

Why it matters

Clearer narratives help users interpret risk indicators more consistently and ensure product messaging remains aligned with formal regulatory terminology.

Coming next

We are continuing to expand explainability and ownership context across Risk & Compliance with many new and exciting features and updates scheduled for the coming months.

Next up: enhanced explainability for Dark STS Transfers and AIS Spoofing.
