We are pleased to share a new feature for cargo tracking with the launch of the dark activity tag.

What is it?

This new feature is based on the implementation of satellite imagery to confirm STS transfers. It improves our ability to detect vessels carrying sanctioned or previously sanctioned cargo that attempt to evade tracking by turning off their AIS transponders.

We have significantly improved our tracking of flows from Iran and Venezuela, both of which involve sanctioned cargo. For more details, refer to our articles on the Iranian Oil Tracking Methodology and Accounting for Unidentified Dark Venezuela Vessels, which include a new section on tracking flows using satellite imagery.

The dark activity tag will significantly boost tracking confidence. Vessels are assigned this tag when sources confirm their load or discharge activities while their AIS was turned off or when the vessel was spoofing. This enhancement ensures we stay ahead in monitoring sanctioned activities and maintaining the integrity of our tracking process.

Methodology
