Definition & methodology
The Grains S&D API delivers comprehensive supply and demand analysis through two core modules:
Balance Sheets
Annual balance sheets provide detailed supply and demand analysis for major exporting countries, helping you visualize the fundamentals affecting commodity prices. These sheets include model-based estimates for production, consumption, and trade to arrive at educated estimates of ending stocks, which are key price drivers.
Balance sheets are updated bi-monthly to keep you informed of evolving market conditions throughout the year.
Export Module
The export matrix serves as your dashboard for global trade, forecasting annual flows from major and minor exporters to all significant importers on a monthly basis. These projections result from detailed demand analysis using country-specific models that incorporate:
Price dynamics
Macroeconomic and demographic trends
Trade policy and preferences
Commodity substitution patterns
Demand elasticity
Data availability
The S&D data delivers at least five years of history plus current and next marketing years for each country relative to the current trade year. For instance, during trade year 2025/26, marketing year balance sheets for all countries are available up to 2026/27. Marketing year balance sheets for 2027/28 will become available at the beginning of the 2026/27 trade year.
Example: At the beginning of the wheat trade year 2026/27 (Jul-Jun) in July, all 2027/28 balances and trade estimates will become available, including projections for Australia (Oct-2027 to Sep-2028) and other major exporters.
Update frequency
Balance sheets are released twice monthly, on the 7th and 22nd (+/- 1 day for holidays). The first release of each month is strategically timed to be available ahead of the monthly USDA WASDE report, ensuring you have Kpler's independent analysis before official government statistics.
