New product: Kpler AIS

Weโ€™re pleased to announce the launch of Kpler AIS, a global vessel-position data feed from Kpler combining Terrestrial, Roaming, and Satellite AIS to deliver full maritime coverage - from shorelines to the open oceans.

What is Kpler AIS

Kpler AIS is a data feed capturing Automatic Identification System (AIS) signals broadcast by vessels including position, speed, heading, and static vessel details. This feed is built on a foundation of over 13,000 receivers comprising:

  • Terrestrial AIS: High-density receivers covering ports and coastal waters, delivering precise detail where vessel traffic is dense.

  • Roaming AIS: Filling in gaps in high-traffic but challenging coastal zones where collisions or signal obstructions can degrade reliability.

  • Satellite AIS: Ensuring sub-minute, global visibility including remote open-ocean regions beyond terrestrial reach.

    Why Kpler AIS

  • Continuous global coverage โ€” no blind spots: every region worldwide is covered via the combined AIS sources.

  • Low latency: vessel position updates delivered in near real time (sub-minute, including satellite streams).

  • Rich data fields: static information (vessel name, dimensions, type), voyage info (destination, ETA), positional data (latitude, longitude, speed, heading).

  • High vessel detection volume: the network detects over 300,000 active vessels daily through 13,000 receivers.

Kpler AIS - example use cases

  • Build global vessel-tracking models for supply chain and commodity flow forecasting.

  • Monitor fleet performance and optimize routing in both coastal and open-ocean segments.

  • Support logistical & operational planning: estimating arrival times, anticipating delays, managing port congestion.

  • Enable risk, compliance, and maritime security use-cases: insurance claims, regulatory compliance, monitoring vessel behaviour in sensitive zones.

  • Complement other data sets (cargo, port, environmental) for richer maritime analytics.

Providing a superior standard in vessel tracking

Terrestrial AIS alone is insufficient for global maritime visibility: while extremely useful close to shore, its range is limited. As vessels move into open waters, there is often a coverage vacuum. Kpler AIS closes those gaps.

By layering these sources, the feed gives users a seamless, uninterrupted view of vessel movements across all maritime zones โ€” from port approaches to remote ocean passages.
