Overview

Releasing during the week of 14 April, Kpler has taken the transition to the new merged platform as an opportunity to refine and simplify our Vessel Type classifications across all commodities within the web application. Importantly, these changes will not be reflected within the Excel Add-In or the API at this time.

This article will guide you through understanding these changes, how they impact your dashboards and searches, and what steps you can take to adapt smoothly.

Understanding the classification changes

To provide a clearer and more streamlined classification system, we've updated our Vessel Type classifications. You can access a comprehensive side-by-side overview of the "Old" classifications (as used on legacy platforms) and the "New" classifications (on the new Kpler terminal) below for each commodity vessel type. This guide will help you quickly compare and understand the adjustments.

What You Need to Know:

Impact on dashboards and widgets

If you use these vessel classifications as filters within your dashboards and widgets, please be aware that we've implemented a remapping strategy for these filters to take place during the migration to the new platform. The re-mapping tables are contained in the above links. For example, any filter previously set for "LR3" vessel type will now be adapted to the "Suezmax/LR3" classification. While the mapping logic aims to maintain consistency, it's important to note that these are not exact one-to-one matches due to the nuanced changes in category definitions.

Search & filter results

If you frequently conduct searches related to export Flows or Freight for specific vessel types like "VLCC," be prepared to notice some differences in the results. The updated classifications may slightly alter the search outcomes, reflecting the refined vessel categories. When conducting searches for specific vessel types, keep in mind the updated classifications. You may need to modify your search terms to align with the new categories to get the desired results.
